Avi Buffalo Debut Album
I suppose at this early stage I’ll have many albums of the summer, but so far, Avi Buffalo’s debut album (released April 27th), is the one I just can’t get enough of.
A superbly put together album with top notch production values and careful attention to every detail, right down to the order of the songs. Without knowing anything, your first listen would excite you enough, with their adept musicianship and insightful lyrics, but to learn that they’re all around 19 years old is astonishing.
Avi Buffallo is a quartet of Long Beach based kids singing about youthful angst, but an angst seen clearly, as though they’ve stepped forward in time to gain perspective and objectivity, enabling them to process that angst as art. They’re able to negotiate that slippery slope between innocence and wisdom, singing about embarrassing personal issues and making them sound like universal experience. Imagine if N-dubz did a Plan B on us and went all dreamy LA summer in collaboration with The Shins or The XX.
Lead singer, Avi (short for Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg), has a voice that sends chills and feels his music so deeply that you are immediately right there with the young singer having your feelings stomped on and heart broken in that way that only young love can do. Avi cites influences of Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young, Wilco, Flaming Lips and Pink Floyd, and this is evident throughout but with a unique twist.
I can’t stop listening to this, definitely one that will be in rotation for a while.
