Aspiring designers get ready for a once in a lifetime opportunity for your designs seen by over a million music fans ever year…
<p/p>

O2 have teamed up with the amazing Irish designer Emma Manley to launch the most exciting Irish design competition of the year. O2 are offering aspiring Irish designers the chance to create The O2 Angels’ outfits – both male and female – seen by over 1 million music fans each year.

The winner will receive €2,000, tickets to The O2, their costumes will be worn by every O2 Angel, admired at each and every gig at the venue, and a two-week internship with top Irish designer Emma Manley (emmamanley.com) in the run up to her 2013 London and Paris shows.

Speaking with Emma Manley at the launch she says that there’s more to think about than just creating an amazing design. As the O2 Angels will be wearing their outfits while working the designer must also think practically about their designs – they need to be wearable, breathable, and importantly, easily washable!

Emma Manley Spring/Summer 2013.

Entries are to be uploaded online no later than 12.00 noon Monday 10 December. A shortlist of 6 Finalists will be announced on Thursday 13 December and asked to produce their costumes by Monday 28 January 2013 for final judging.

For full competition entry details and to download the design brief, see www.O2.ie/paperscissorsrock.

Desperate to get into the moustached spirit this Movember but feel you’re lacking in the testosterone department? Fret no more! Whether you’re struggling to grow some facial fuzz or you’re, y’know, a girl, we bring you our top ten ‘tache-tacular products to get you feeling just like a Mo-Bro.

Fashion blogger, Josie Sampson, unearths five icons of style where you’d least expect to find them.

We’ve all heard the story of Newton discovering gravity after an apple fell from its tree and hit him on the head, right? “How does this relate to fashion?” you may ask. Well dear reader, the apple never falls far from the tree; it’s all about that moment when inspiration strikes – even in the most unlikely of places. With this in mind, we bring you a list of sure-to-be fashion icons whose style is just waiting to be seen in a brand new light. So make like Einstein and get ready for your ‘Eureka!’ moment.

1. Daria

Who says a cartoon can’t be a style icon? Take one look at the cast of Daria and you’ll be lacing up your clumpiest Doc Martens in a fashion tribute to the morose nature of teen life. The 90s grunge revival is big news across the catwalks this autumn/winter season and Daria and co. are the ultimate style leaders. The donning of thick rimmed glasses and the pairing of chunky biker boots with pleated skirts sloping out from under utilitarian jackets can be seen all over the hippest hangouts of East London. So break out your sombre colour palettes and sullen dispositions and you’ll be all set to stomp the streets the Daria way.

Boots: Office £85; Coat: Hearts & Bows at Ark £30; Skirt: River Island £35; Glasses: American Apparel £75

2. The Queen

It might be easy to overlook the Queen as an icon of style but HRH has debuted some seriously chic ensembles in her 86 years. From her twinsets and pearls to her penchant for tartan, tweed and ‘elegant-casual’ – not forgetting her everlasting hat phase – it’s all there. Channel your inner royal in time for this autumn’s wedding season with matching two pieces in pastel hues. Pile on the pearls for instant regal glam, or spend a jaunty weekend in the country in your Barbour jacket and chicest headscarf.

Scarf: Jonathan Saunders at net-a-porter.com £285; Necklace: Kenneth Jay Lane at net-a-porter.com £250; Coat: Topshop £80; Jacket: New Look £34.99
Image: about.com – Photographer: Julian Herbert/Getty Images

3. Miss Havisham

Winter is almost upon us once more and bitter solemnity has never looked so luxurious. The connoisseur of Gothic sadness, Great Expectations’ Miss Havisham is right on the fashion money. With swamping layers of heavy velvet and rich lace, she makes a darkly romantic fashion statement. Her ghostly and eccentric style perfectly encapsulates the fragile beauty of the icy season. Pile on the silkiest fabrics and swathe yourself in the prettiest pearls to channel delicately brooding beauty. Just hope for better luck in your love life.

Boots: Versace at net-a-porter.com £1325; Dress: River Island £30; Skirt: Topshop £40; Lipstick: Chanel £25; Collar: Dorothy Perkins £15; Earrings: Accessorize £10
Image: deadlline.com (image Lionsgate UK)

4. Little My

The giant ballerina bun? The totally on-trend A-line mini dress in autumn’s hottest burgundy hue? The black opaque tights finished with grungy ankle boots? Little My of The Moomins fame is a style icon hiding right under our noses.

This fiesty and seriously determined little moomin works that just-thrown-on look down to a T and wouldn’t look out of place mingling with the likes of Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof on the front row of London’s hottest fashion shows.

Shoes: Office £45; Tights: Topshop £8; Dress: Marni at net-a-porter.com £920; Hair bun shaper: New Look £2.99; Eyeliner: Rimmel £4.99
Image: natalichen.blogspot.co.uk (originally created by Tove Jansson)

5. Fantastic Mr Fox

In what some may call a strange twist of events, the characters of (Wes Anderson’s take on Dahl classic) Fantastic Mr Fox kit themselves out in the very equestrian-esque clothing worn by those that would potentially hunt them down. No stranger though than a fox wearing a suit in the first place, I imagine. However, with tartan and tweed both key trends this season, as seen on the likes of Burberry Prorsum, Gucci and Hermes, Mr Fox and his cohorts couldn’t be getting it more right. Think double breasted jackets teamed with sumptuous leather riding boots and you’ll be exuding foxy levels of suavity in no time. Furry tail optional.

Blazer: River Island £50; Boots: Gucci at net-a-porter.com £810; Trousers: Topshop £40; Belt: Burberry Prorsum at net-a-porter.com £650; Hat: Topshop £25

Debenhams has announced €7m savings off thousands of just-in, new products in a massive 6 day event across designer fashion, home and beauty – a move that will no doubt force others to follow.

As of this morning, Debenhams is cutting prices with 50% off today only and then 25% off for the remainder of the 6 day sale. Huge savings, which are normally seen across the store just before Christmas, will be in place across designer ranges from the likes of Julien Macdonald, Henry Holland and Jasper Conran – so you can invest in these big name brands for a fraction of a designer budget.

The six day sale starts on Tuesday 11th September with up to 50% off for the first day only, continuing until Sunday September 16th with up to 25% off tens of thousands of new season lines across all new stock in womenswear, accessories, menswear, home, childrenswear, cosmetics, lingerie, sports and leisure.

The sale includes top designers – including Jasper Conran, Julien Macdonald, John Rocha, Matthew Williamson, Jeff Banks, Betty Jackson and Henry Holland – as part of Debenhams’ ongoing commitment to make premium designer fashion and homeware more accessible.

All beauty and fragrance will also be reduced by 10%, including brands such as Chanel, Dior, YSL and Benefit.

Customers can also take advantage of the deals online, having their bargains delivered directly to their door via Debenhams.ie.

Singlehood 17th – 22nd September as part of ABSOLUT Fringe Festival, Project Arts Centre.

Are you SINGLE? Have you never been SINGLE? Do you wish you were SINGLE? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the show for you. After all, any dope can be in a relationship. Welcome to Singlehood.

This is not a play. There is no literary inventiveness. Just people talking about their lives, loves and longings. Singlehood is an explosive look into the highs and lows of being single. And it’s all true. Seriously.

Singlehood previewed with great success at the Mindfield theatre at Electric Picnic, a funny and endearing look at single life. Director Una McKevitt and writer David Coffey interviewed over 50 Singletons and bring their raw and revealing stories to the stage for ABSOLUT Fringe Festival 2012 to hilarious and devastating effect.

With a fantastic ensemble of 11 performers including comedian Eric Lalor, actress Eva-Jane Gaffney and DJ Conor Behan, Singlehood is an exclusive look at the personal triumphs and losses we all experience but seldom articulate, framed by a stomping single’s soundtrack by musical comedy duo The Guilty Folk. Singlehood runs from 17th to 22nd of September Upstairs in Project Arts Centre.

Director Una McKevitt, who conceived ‘Singlehood’, is working in collaboration with TV writer David Coffey (Dan & Becs, Sarah & Steve, Fade Street) and together they have interviewed more than 50 single men and women between 16 – 60 years of age. From these interviews and in collaboration with the cast, Una and David have devised a brutally honest yet heartwarming show about the roller coaster ride of Singlehood.

Human relationships are always at the heart of Una’s work. Her previous shows Victor & Gord, 565+ and The Big Deal have been described as “stunning… important… moving… life-afirming… uplifting… charming… compelling”.

Says McKevitt; “The concept for Singlehood came about last year and I’m thrilled it will premiere at ABSOLUT Fringe. In conceiving the show I considered what it means to be single in a society where romantic relationships have such high status and defined rituals. Are single people just waiting for love to find them or does being single offer it’s own, possibly richer, rewards?”

Singlehood is kindly supported by Project Arts Centre, Absolut Fringe, FundIt donations, Java Republic and Diep Late Night Cocktail Bar.

Tickets – Preview €12.00 | Full price €16.00 | OAP €14.00 | Student €14.00

Monster Truck Gallery & Nialler9 present Minimum Maximum | September 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th.

With festival season almost over (there’s still Valentia Isle Festival to go) and Hard Working Class Heroes not due until October we’re feeling a bit of live music void which we’re quickly going to fill with Minimum Maximum.
